In California, the penalties for a hit-and-run involving severe injury can be quite severe. If you flee the scene after causing an accident that results in injury or death, it is considered a felony under California Vehicle Code § 20001.
The potential penalties include:
- Imprisonment: Up to 4 years in state prison.
- Fines: Between $1,000 and $10,000.
- Additional Consequences: Points on your driving record, potential civil lawsuits from the victim, and increased car insurance premiums.
It’s important to note that these penalties can be even more severe if the accident results in a fatality or if there are aggravating factors involved.
