Darrick Patrick Ocegueda, a 45-year-old ex-con, was sentenced on Friday to 56 years to life in prison for fatally stabbing a 24-year-old man after a fight in Santa Ana.
Ocegueda, 45, was previously convicted on March 16 of last year of first-degree murder with a sentencing enhancement for the personal use of a deadly weapon.
Ocegueda stabbed Daniel Bahena to death on June 21, 2000. He was on parole at the time. He pleaded guilty in June of 2018 to assault with a deadly weapon and was sentenced to two years in prison.
The fight between Bahena and Ocegueda happened outside of a CVS drug store when they challenged each other to a fight, according to the prosecutor.
Ocegueda weighed 80 pounds more than Bahena and was beating him during their fight. But the a friend of Ocegueda used a skateboard to try to protect Bahena, who then ran off with a friend of his.
Ocegueda however was not done yet. He got two knives out of his SUV and then ran after Bahena for over a quarter mile to an apartment building complex.
When police officers finally arrived at that apartment building, they found that Ocegueda had stabbed Bahena to death.
