The Santa Ana Police Department (SAPD) continues to lead the charge in protecting the community through proactive enforcement and decisive action.

During the week of August 2–8, 2025, officers successfully seized multiple firearms in separate incidents, showcasing their commitment to reducing gun violence and maintaining public safety.

Juvenile Firearm Possession and Vandalism Incident

In one case, patrol officers responded to a vandalism-in-progress call involving two juveniles tagging a business wall. One suspect was reportedly armed. A QOLT officer located the suspects, who fled on foot.

During the pursuit, one suspect discarded a firearm onto a rooftop. With assistance from the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA), the weapon was recovered, and both juveniles were taken into custody without incident.

Under California Assembly Bill 383, juveniles adjudged as wards of the court for firearm-related offenses face a prohibition on firearm possession until the age of 30 1. Violations may be charged as misdemeanors or felonies, depending on the severity of the offense. Additionally, the court may require the juveniles to relinquish any firearms and comply with probation investigations and reporting procedures.

Public Firearm Discharge Arrest

In another recent incident, officers responded to reports of a man discharging a firearm in public. The suspect was located with a loaded Smith & Wesson pistol concealed in his waistband. He was arrested and booked at the Santa Ana Jail.

Under California Penal Code §246.3, the negligent discharge of a firearm is considered a “wobbler” offense—meaning it can be prosecuted as either a misdemeanor or felony 2. Misdemeanor penalties include up to one year in county jail and a $1,000 fine, while felony charges can result in 16 months to 3 years in state prison and the loss of firearm ownership rights. If the discharge occurs near inhabited dwellings or vehicles, it is automatically treated as a felony with enhanced sentencing.

Santa Ana PD’s Ongoing Commitment

These incidents are part of the department’s weekly firearm seizure initiative, which continues to yield results. The promotional graphic for the week of August 2–8 serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by illegal firearms and the importance of vigilant policing.

The Santa Ana Police Department remains steadfast in its mission to protect residents and uphold the law. Through swift response, inter-agency collaboration, and community engagement, SAPD is setting a high standard for urban law enforcement.
