Civil Rights History Exhibit Opens on day of the Signing of the Civil Rights Act 50 Years Ago
OC Human Relations Assembles Historic Displays
OC Civil Rights History Exhibit Opening on July 2, 2014, which is the 50th Anniversary of the day that President Lyndon Baines Johnson signed the US Civil Rights Act into law. This bi-partisan bill set the basic standard, the consensus, the unifying vision of the United States that all people have a right to live free from discrimination based on the color of their skin, their religion or other aspects of their being.
This unique exhibit will feature large displays created by the graphic artist, Susan Reese, and curated by OC Human Relations Commission. The Commission was created nearly a half century ago to insure that this national vision for fairness and equality was a shared value and that the Board of Supervisors would work to make it real in Orange County.

- WHERE: Second Baptist Church, 4300 Westminster Ave, Santa Ana (between Newhope and Harbor)
- SPECIAL GUEST: Dorothy Mulkey, plaintiff on the historic Fair Housing Lawsuit before the US Supreme Court
- HOSTS: OC Human Relations Commission and Second Baptist Church
OC Human Relations Commission Chair, Kenneth Inouye, called on all OC residents to “recognize this historic day in our history as a country where we all came together in the shared vision that it is wrong to face discrimination because of the color of your skin, your religion, or other differences.”
“Join the OC Human Relations Commission as we document some of the historic moments in Orange County’s Civil Rights History through this beautiful exhibit.”
Inouye went on to suggest that the Commission would like to develop a traveling exhibit and curriculum that can be used in OC schools to teach some of the important civil rights actions and people who made a difference in Orange County then and today.
