Last night, around 10:35 p.m., the Irvine Police Department (IPD) responded to reports of a traffic collision at the intersection of Michelson Drive and Mac Arthur Boulevard. Our partners from the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) responded to assist.

The initial investigation determined that a red Toyota Sienna van was traveling southbound on Mac Arthur towards Michelson. A man, riding a non-motorized scooter, traveled eastbound into the intersection, from the southwest corner, across the southbound lanes of Mac Arthur. The van and the man on the scooter collided.

The man on the scooter sustained serious injuries from the collision and was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The man was identified as Karl Ian Vito Zamoranos, of Carson, California.

The driver of the van was contacted at the scene by officers and cooperated with the investigation. Officers determined the driver was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

IPD’s Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) is investigating the cause of this collision. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Joshua Balos at 949-724-7024.
