At approximately 5:06 p.m. yesterday, police officers were dispatched to a subject seen with a rifle in the hills behind the Pageant of the Masters facility, according to the Laguna Beach Police Department.
Multiple officers and two drones were utilized to track the subject. He was ultimately contacted at his vehicle.
The investigation revealed he had just bought a new bb gun and was testing out the scope. He was counseled over the violations.

- Bans brandishing replicas of firearms, including toy guns and air guns.
- Restricts possession of dangerous weapons in public places and vehicles.
- Unincorporated Orange County
- Multiple districts (e.g., Rossmoor, Costa Mesa/Newport, South Laguna, Santiago Creek, Trabuco Canyon, Silverado, Modjeska Canyon) prohibit discharge of firearms and projectile weapons unless for protection or pest control.
- These rules apply to rifles, shotguns, pistols, and likely extend to air guns and similar devices.
- Costa Mesa & Newport Beach (Unincorporated Areas)
- Specific boundaries are defined where discharge of firearms and similar weapons is banned.
- Laguna Beach & San Juan Capistrano (Unincorporated Coastal Areas)
- Restrictions apply to discharge of weapons in defined zones.
- Santiago Creek, Orange Park Acres, East Cerro Villa Heights
- Local ordinances restrict use of firearms and likely include air guns and slingshots.

- Discharge of projectile weapons is prohibited in designated unincorporated zones.

- Local codes restrict use of weapons including air guns and slingshots near roads and residential areas.
