Police are trying to identify a porch pirate who struck twice in Irvine

On January 10, a man stole a package from a resident’s front door and another from the mail room at an apartment community near Main St. and Cartwright, according to the Irvine Police Department.

The man appears to be white and is perhaps in his 30’s. In one instance he was wearing a long-sleeved white pullover, black pants and a black backpack as well as a baseball cap with the letter “A.” In another he donned a gray pullover with a hoodie.

If you can help us locate him, please contact jbaskin@cityofirvine.org.

In California, package theft, often referred to as “porch piracy,” is considered a serious offense. The penalties for stealing packages can include:

  • Misdemeanor Charges: Package theft is typically charged as a misdemeanor, which can result in up to one year in county jail and a fine of up to $1,000.
  • Restitution: Offenders may also be required to pay restitution to the victims, covering the value of the stolen items.
  • Repeat Offenders: If an individual has multiple convictions for package theft within a three-year period, the penalties can be more severe.

These penalties aim to deter individuals from engaging in this type of theft and to protect residents’ property.
