On June 26, patrol officers investigated a robbery at the Spectrum Target, according to the Irvine Police Department.
The suspect went to a cash register and accessed the cash drawer after manipulating the screen. The suspect then pushed an employee as he fled.
IPD detectives followed up and learned the suspect was possibly responsible for over 35 other Target thefts in Southern California.
On Tuesday, they located the suspect at a hotel in Corona and arrested him. While in custody, the suspect fought and injured a detective.
Anthony Steven Machuca, 29, from Baldwin Park, was arrested on charges of robbery and battery on a police officer.
Here’s a summary of the penalties Anthony Steven Machuca could face:
Robbery (California Penal Code § 211):
This is a felony. Since the robbery happened at a store and involved pushing an employee, it likely qualifies as second-degree robbery.
Penalty: 2, 3, or 5 years in state prison.
Battery on a Police Officer (Penal Code § 243):
If the officer was injured, this can be charged as a felony.
Penalty: Up to 3 years in county jail and/or a fine up to $10,000.
Additional Factors:
If he’s connected to over 35 other thefts, prosecutors might seek harsher penalties, including longer sentences or charges for organized retail theft. If convicted of both crimes, the sentences could be served one after the other.
