Statement from President Joe Biden Congratulating Claudia Sheinbaum as President-elect of Mexico

I congratulate Claudia Sheinbaum on her historic election as the first woman President of Mexico. I look forward to working closely with President-elect Sheinbaum in the spirit of partnership and friendship that reflects the enduring bonds between our two countries. I express our commitment to advancing the values and interests of both our nations to the benefit of our peoples. I also congratulate the Mexican people for conducting a nationwide successful democratic electoral process involving races for more than 20,000 positions at the local, state, and federal levels.

Orange County Supervisor Vicente Sarmiento also offered his congratulations to Claudia Sheinbaum:

Orange County’s Second District is home to one of the largest per capita populations of Mexican nationals outside of Mexico. On their behalf, I extend heartfelt congratulations to the people of Mexico on their historic milestone of electing the first woman President in its 214- year history as a sovereign republic. President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum not only shattered another glass ceiling but also paved the way for countless women who aspire to leadership roles in Mexico and beyond. This election sends a powerful message that gender should never be a barrier to achieving the highest levels of public service. May her presidency be recognized by compassion, wisdom, and a steadfast commitment to the well-being of all Mexicans, at home and abroad.”
