Fri. Apr 3rd, 2026

nightHeading into the Easter weekend, the Santa Ana Police Department is prioritizing road safety with a scheduled DUI and Driver’s License Checkpoint. Whether you are traveling to see family or heading out for a holiday meal, the goal is to ensure everyone reaches their destination safely.

Event Details

  • When: Friday, April 3, 2026
  • Time: 6:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.
  • Where: Undisclosed location within the City of Santa Ana

Why Now?

Checkpoint locations are chosen based on data regarding alcohol and drug-related crashes. This pre-Easter checkpoint serves as a vital tool in removing impaired drivers from the streets before the holiday celebrations begin.

Police remind motorists that impairment isn’t limited to alcohol; certain prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and marijuana (despite its legal status for use) can all lead to a DUI.

The Real Cost of a DUI

Getting caught driving under the influence or without a valid license carries heavy legal and financial weight.

Legal & Financial Penalties:

  • Fines: A first-time DUI conviction can cost an average of $13,500 in fines and legal fees.
  • License Suspension: Your driving privileges will be suspended immediately.
  • Jail Time: Depending on the circumstances, even a first offense can result in jail time.
  • Unlicensed Driving: Operating a vehicle without a valid license can lead to vehicle impoundment and additional criminal citations.

Insurance Implications:

Beyond the courtroom, a DUI will devastate your auto insurance profile. You can expect:

  • Skyrocketing Premiums: Rates typically increase by 200% to 300% following a conviction.
  • Policy Cancellation: Many “standard” insurers will drop your coverage entirely, labeling you a high-risk driver.
  • SR-22 Requirement: You will likely be required to file an SR-22 certificate for several years to prove financial responsibility, which comes with its own set of filing fees and higher rates.

Play it Safe

Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. If you plan on celebrating this weekend, please designate a sober driver or use a ride-share service.
