Firefighters put out a carport fire at a Costa Mesa apartment complex

Costa Mesa Fire & Rescue crews responded to a working residential structure fire in the 3100 block of College Avenue on Saturday.

Upon arrival, initial crews observed heavy smoke conditions and flames, along with the report of at least one individual or more individuals remaining in the impacted structure.

CMFR crews quickly identified that the main portion of the fire was located in a garage within a row of detached garages and was adjacent to the impacted residential living unit.

CMFR crews conducted an aggressive attack on the fire, while other crews initiated the evacuation of the individuals from the residential structure immediately threatened by the potential fire spread.

Subsequently, CMFR crews were able to confine the fire to one detached garage, extinguish it, and stop the spread and extension of fire into the adjacent residential unit(s) and other nearby detached garages.

There was extensive fire damage to the primary detached garage, along with notable smoke damage that impacted some of the adjacent units.

There were no injuries noted and CMFR coordinated with the Red Cross to help facilitate housing and other support needs for the displaced occupants.

Our partners at CMPD were very helpful in securing the impacted scene area with traffic and pedestrian control. CMFR also coordinated with the city Building Department and utility companies to determine the extent of the collateral damage.

The fire is currently under investigation.
