Domestic violence suspect on parole shot after assaulting police officers in Anaheim

ANAHEIM, Calif. (September 17, 2024) – An officer-involved shooting occurred after police responded to a domestic disturbance call for service. A weapon was located at the scene, according to the Anaheim Police Department.

On September 16, 2024, at approximately 8:00 p.m., Anaheim Police officers responded to the 700 block of W. Santa Ana Street after they were called to the scene of a domestic disturbance. Two officers arrived and encountered the suspect, who was identified as 33-year-old James Brasher.

There was a confrontation between the officers and Brasher, and then an officer-involved shooting occurred. Brasher was struck twice by the officer’s bullets. The officers provided first aid to Brasher immediately after the shooting. Anaheim Fire & Rescue personnel arrived and transported him to a hospital for further treatment. A weapon was located at the scene.

The initial investigation revealed that Brasher was on parole and listed as “armed and dangerous.” Before this incident, he had an active “no bail” warrant issued for his arrest.

Brasher was released from the hospital several hours later. He was immediately taken into custody and charged with felony aggravated assault, resisting a peace officer by force or violence, violation of a court order, and a violation of parole. He is currently in custody at the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

The Orange County District Attorney’s Office responded to initiate the investigation into the circumstances of the officer-involved shooting. Anaheim PD Homicide Detectives, the Anaheim PD Major Incident Review Team (MIRT), Anaheim PD Internal Affairs, and personnel from the Anaheim Police Review Board (PRB) and Office of Independent Review (OIR) also responded to the incident. The investigation is ongoing at this time.
