21-year-old Mateo Dina Zavala of Santa Ana, California was bBooked into the Pima County Sheriff’s Office Jail for 1st degree homicide, endangerment, 3 counts aggravated assault and 1 count drive by shooting, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Male victim:

  • 29-year-old man. Resident of Casa Grande.
  • Driver in victim vehicle and father of 3-year-old girl.
  • Treated for a gunshot wound and released from Banner University Medical Center.

Child Victim:

  • 3-year-old girl.
  • Passenger in victim vehicle.

Treated for a gunshot wound and released from a local hospital.

Deceased Victim:

  • 25-year-old Marilynn Patricia Pacheco of Tucson.
  • Passenger in victim vehicle.
  • Pronounced deceased at Banner University Medical Center.
  • The suspect and victim are known to each other.

Initial Release Posted on Saturday, June 29, 2019, at 9:08 PM:

On June 29, 2019, just after 5 p.m., Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) troopers responded to reports of shots being fired between two vehicles on northbound Interstate 19 near kilometer 65 (Esperanza Blvd).

At that location, an adult female, adult male and child were all found with gunshot wounds and were transported to the hospital with serious injuries. A suspect, Martin Zavala, a Santa Ana, CA resident, has been taken into custody and AZDPS detectives are taking the investigative lead in the case.

Both directions of Interstate 19 are closed for the investigation with an unknown ETA to re-open. Traffic is being routed off I-19 at Esperanza. Troopers are being assisted by the Pima County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Border Patrol. Additional information will be released and updated here as it becomes available.
