Community: Santa Ana City Council Takes Stand to Support Worker Cooperatives

Santa Ana, CA – At last night’s Council meeting, the Santa Ana City Council passed a resolution of support for the development and growth of local worker cooperatives, becoming the first city in Orange County to formally support worker cooperatives. Worker cooperatives are businesses owned and operated by their workers.

These businesses provide local goods and services, stable jobs for residents, and offer new economic opportunities for lower income workers in the City. In addition, worker cooperatives enable workers in the community to gain important business and leadership skills, as well as assists individuals with significant barriers to employment.

“Social mobility is generally hard to achieve for low income families in Santa Ana. Supporting worker cooperatives provides opportunities for wealth building: not only creating a key job retention strategy, but also creating a democratic workplace that embraces and supports community and solidarity. We have some great examples in Santa Ana and we should build on these successes,” stated Mayor Pro Tem Michele Martinez.

As an important initial step, the City of Santa Ana will work with local stakeholders in providing information on how residents can start a worker cooperative, as well as on how local business owners who are considering retiring can convert their businesses to a worker cooperative. Instead of closing their business or moving out of the City, a worker cooperative conversion could save local jobs and keep wealth and services in the community.

Santa Ana is the first city in Orange County to officially support worker cooperatives and joins major cities such as Oakland, Berkeley, and Austin in promoting local economic development efforts that focus on assisting local residents in becoming co-owners in a business and removing barriers to employment for them.
