Santa Ana now has 728 COVID-19 cases as of May 17

Today, May 17, the OC Health Care Agency reported a total of 4,376 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Orange County and 728 cases in Santa Ana. The Santa Ana case numbers don’t include infected inmates in County jails.

There were two new deaths reported today and 88 victims have died in total here in Orange County. There were 155 new cases announced today. There are currently 201 victims in local hospitals and 78 of them are inIntesnive Care Units.

The California Department of Public Health today announced the most recent statistics on COVID-19. California now has 78,839 confirmed cases and 3,261 deaths.

• 31,967 New Cases
• TOTAL DEATHS: 88,709
• 1,394 New Deaths

Health Care Worker Infection Rates

As of May 16th, local health departments have reported 8,248 confirmed positive cases in health care workers and 46 deaths statewide. (The number of deaths went down by one in this reporting period based on verification of data).

Every person has a role to play. Protecting yourself and your family comes down to common sense: 

• Staying home except for essential needs/activities following local and state public health guidelines when patronizing approved businesses. To the extent that such sectors are re-opened, Californians may leave their homes to work at, patronize, or otherwise engage with those businesses, establishments or activities.
• Practicing social distancing.
• Wearing a cloth face mask when out in public.
• Washing hands with soap and water for a minimum of 20 seconds.
• Avoiding touching eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands.
• Covering a cough or sneeze with your sleeve, or disposable tissue. Wash your hands afterward.
• Avoiding close contact with people who are sick.
• Staying away from work, school or other people if you become sick with respiratory symptoms like fever and cough.
• Following guidance from public health officials.

What to Do if You Think You’re Sick
Call ahead: If you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 (fever, cough or shortness of breath) and may have had contact with a person with COVID-19, or recently traveled to countries with apparent community spread, call your health care provider before seeking medical care so that appropriate precautions can be taken.
