Poll: Are hipsters turning Dia de Los Muertos into another drinking holiday?

In its 11th year, Noche de Altares (Night of the Altars), was expected to draw tens of thousands over nine hours with its entertainment stages, community-based vendors and more than 100 ofrendas (altars) dedicated to the memory of the deceased, according to the O.C. Register.

The event, which was held yesterday, “has become more commercialized, it is now a combination of an art exhibit and street fair,” according to the Santa Ana Sentinel, which also reported that “El día de los muertos was very much the theme of the night at the Santora where just about all of the galleries displayed artwork, photography, even clothing influenced by the day of the dead theme.”

But friends tell me that while they enjoyed the event, they also started to see major signs that hipsters are trying to turn this special cultural event into yet another Mexican drinking holiday, like Cinco de Mayo.  The OC Weekly saw this coming, running a Do’s and Don’ts article before the Noche de Altares event.  Here are a few excerpts from that article:

  • DON’T think celebrating on this day is on par with Cinco de Mayo. It’s meant to be lively and inviting, but it’s a family holiday, and getting drunk at such a festival would make you a pendejo.
  • DON’T think this holiday is related to Halloween in any way. You shouldn’t pair your costume with a painted sugar-skull face or dress up like the quintessential Mexican with a sombrero and poncho. Día de los Muertos isn’t meant to be spooky or a joke.
  • We wish this last one could go without saying, but this also means don’t be the slutty Día de los Muertos girl. If you can’t be El Catrín or La Catrina, just wear your normal clothes—with grandma in mind.

Day of the Dead (Spanish: Día de Muertos) is a Mexican holiday celebrated throughout Mexico and around the world in other cultures. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. It is particularly celebrated in Mexico, where the day is a bank holiday. The celebration takes place on October 31, November 1 and November 2, in connection with the Christian triduum of Hallowmas: All Hallows’ Eve, All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day.[1][2] Traditions connected with the holiday include building private altars called ofrendas honoring the deceased using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed and visiting graves with these as gifts. They also leave possessions of the deceased.

Scholars trace the origins of the modern Mexican holiday to indigenous observances dating back hundreds of years and to an Aztec festival dedicated to the goddess Mictecacihuatl. The holiday has spread throughout the world: In Brazil Dia de Finados is a public holiday that many Brazilians celebrate by visiting cemeteries and churches. In Spain there are festivals and parades, and, at the end of the day, people gather at cemeteries and pray for their dead loved ones. Similar observances occur elsewhere in Europe, and similarly themed celebrations appear in many Asian and African cultures.

The Day of the Dead celebrations in Mexico can be traced back to a precolumbian past. Rituals celebrating the deaths of ancestors had been observed by these civilizations perhaps for as long as 2,500–3,000 years.[3] In the pre-Hispanic era skulls were commonly kept as trophies and displayed during the rituals to symbolize death and rebirth.

The festival that became the modern Day of the Dead fell in the ninth month of the Aztec calendar, about the beginning of August, and was celebrated for an entire month. The festivities were dedicated to the goddess[4] known as the “Lady of the Dead”, corresponding to the modern Catrina.

I support what the folks at Calacas Café and El Centro Cultural de Mexico have done with this event.  Yes it has grown considerably and that is fine but if some folks in Downtown Santa Ana want to make it into a drinking holiday then they are doing our community a total disservice.

  • I've seen so many gatherings of Hispanic people drinking it up on any and every holiday this big beautiful country of ours celebrates. Who really cares? You would bitch if the hipsters ignored the Day of the Dead and you now bitch when the hipsters bend an elbow that day? Please. People drink. Look who's in line at the Circle K on St. Patrick's Day! It ain't the Irish! If those hipsters are following the 'Do Not' list, perhaps the motherland offers the Hispanic Culture more comfort. They wouldn't have to worry about those ignorant, bearded, skinny jeans, fedora wearin', tattooed, gentrifying people f-ing it all up for them. The nerve!

  • Cool, somebody is more outspoken than me.
    Why did that article say that there is no relation to Halloween. Obviously there is. The Wikipedia article showed that. The indigenous Aztec ceremony was a month long and started in early August. So it looks like those Catholic Spanish probably took it upon themselves to kick back the pagan celebration to after All Saints Day. Gotta celebrate the Saints before the Dead. Makes sense to me actually.
    Celebrating the Dead for an entire month says a lot about a society. The Death Cult was replaced by the Guilt Cult, or at least suppressed by it.
    The Death Cult and the Guilt Cult both offer a meaningful alternative to the struggling Protestant Capitalism cult.

  • Also, I agree with Anonymous. Every day is a drinking day. Unless one is partaking in a religious fast. (Guilt Cult). Just be glad that we are not drinking your blood.
