Pedestrian struck and killed by a stake-bed truck at 500 E. Edinger

Santa Ana Police Department

Advisory: SAPD Traffic Investigations Unit – Investigates fatal Vehicle vs. Pedestrian collision

Deceased: Ricardo Rivas (60) Santa Ana

On 1/20/2015, officers responded to the scene of a traffic collision involving a commercial stake-bed truck and a pedestrian in the area of 500 E. Edinger Avenue.

At about 0606 hours, a 2004 Ford F-550 stake bed truck driven by a male adult was traveling west on Edinger Avenue. The Ford proceeded through a signal controlled crosswalk at the pedestrian / bike trail in the area of 500 E. Edinger and struck a male adult pedestrian walking north within the crosswalk.

The pedestrian Ricardo Rivas was transported to the hospital where he succumbed to injuries sustained in the collision. The licensed driver remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. Intoxication was not a factor on the part of the driver. It appears the male pedestrian was crossing the roadway within the signal controlled crosswalk when he was struck.

The Collision Investigation Unit is reviewing all evidence and witness accounts in attempt to determine which party had the right of way when the collision occurred.

Any person who may have witnessed this collision or has additional information is asked to call Investigator Hadley at (714) 245-8216.
