SANTA ANA, Calif. – A former boyfriend is scheduled to be arraigned today for stabbing and murdering a man and kidnapping and stabbing his ex-girlfriend. Teodoro Bernal Nunez, 38, Los Angeles, is charged with one felony count of murder, one felony count of domestic battery causing injury with a prior conviction of domestic battery causing injury (Case #15CM12210), one felony count of kidnapping, one misdemeanor count of violation of a protective order, and sentencing enhancements for personal use of a deadly weapon, and great bodily injury involving domestic violence. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 41 years and four months to life in state prison. The People will request Nunez be held without bail at his arraignment today, June 21, 2016, in Department CJ-1, Central Jail, Santa Ana. The time is to be determined.
At approximately 1:30 a.m. on June 18, 2016, Nunez is accused of driving a sport utility vehicle (SUV) to a home on the 1200 block of South Oak Street in Santa Ana. Nunez is accused of getting out of the vehicle holding a 12-inch knife and approaching 27-year-old Omar Castillo and Jane Doe, with whom he had previously been in a dating relationship. The defendant is accused of stabbing Castillo once in the chest and stabbing Jane Doe once in the abdomen and forcing her into his SUV. Castillo died at the scene as a result of the stab wound.
Nunez is accused of fleeing the scene in the SUV with Jane Doe and driving to Brea. A Brea Police Department (BPD) officer pulled over the defendant’s vehicle for a traffic violation near the intersection of Associated Road and Birch Street. BPD saw the victim bleeding and arrested Nunez. Jane Doe was transported to Orange County Global Medical Center in Santa Ana to be treated for the stab wound. The Santa Ana Police Department investigated this case and took custody of the defendant.
