Community: Jan. 20th – Human Trafficking Awareness Event – Evento Sobre Tráfico Humano – Santa Ana Library

RENOWNED PSYCHOLOGIST AND INTERNATIONAL ACTIVIST AND SURVIVOR JOIN FORCES TO COMBAT HUMAN TRAFFICKING

Santa Ana, CA – The Santa Ana Public Library, in collaboration with local nonprofit, Casa De La Familia, will host a Human Trafficking Awareness Event on Saturday, January 20, 2018 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Santa Ana Public Library. Guest speakers include clinical psychologist, author, playwright and expert on human trafficking, Dr. Ana Nogales, and celebrated ultra-marathoner, survivor and international human trafficking activist, Norma Bastidas.

Dr. Nogales is the founder of Nogales Psychological Counseling, Inc., and the nonprofit agency, Casa de la Familia, which she established in the year 1996 for victims of trauma. She was a contributor for the FBI Child Exploitation/Pornography Working Group, the Diversity Working Group Victims of Crime in Washington, D.C., and an Instructor for the National Victims of Crime Academy.

Single mom, survivor and ultra-athlete Norma Bastidas broke the 2014 Guinness World Record for Longest Triathlon after swimming, biking and running 3,762 miles (6,054 km) (designed to follow human trafficking smuggling routes) from Cancún, MX to Washington, D.C. She views these athletic experiences as a metaphor for the incredible trials faced every day by the survivors of human trafficking and sexual violence.

With an estimated annual revenue of $150 billion and roughly 40.6 million enslaved individuals in 2016 – the majority of whom are women and children – modern day slavery is a lucrative industry and is closer to home than we think. It is for this reason we must take initiative to educate ourselves of this epidemic and the steps we can take to end it.

Event highlights will include a firsthand account of personal enslavement from global ultra-marathoner and activist, Norma Bastida, a survivor who was lured into human trafficking under the guise of a model career in Japan. Dr. Ana Nogales will discuss the psychological trauma human trafficking inflicts upon its victims and their families, as well as the ways we can help those individuals.

Doors open at 12:30 p.m. The event is FREE OF COST. Space is limited, please arrive early. The conference will kick off with a preview of Norma Bastidas’ documentary, “Be Relentless” and will be transmitted simultaneously in both English and Spanish. A meet and greet with Dr. Nogales and Norma Bastida will follow the conference.

THE SANTA ANA PUBLIC LIBRARY IS LOCATED AT 26 CIVIC CENTER PLAZA, SANTA ANA, CA 92701 (corner of Civic Center and Ross Street).
