PROMINENT CIVIL RIGHTS LEADER STANDS WITH LOU CORREA

Congressional Candidate for CA-46, Lou Correa, Earns the Support of Respected Orange County Civil Rights Pioneer Sylvia Mendez

Santa Ana, CA — Following several critical endorsements from the Communication Workers of America, Laborers Local 652, and the California Democratic Party, today, former State Senator Lou Correa was officially endorsed by Sylvia Mendez, the Civil Rights leader who fought against racial segregation in Orange County schools in the 1940s.

In response to the endorsement, former State Senator Lou Correa released the following statement:

“I am honored to have the support of Santa Ana’s own Civil Rights pioneer, Sylvia Mendez. Without Ms. Mendez, schools in America might look very different today. In 1943, Ms. Mendez was turned away from the all-white school her light skinned cousins attended, and told to attend an all-Mexican school. Her parents, as well as several other families, sued four different Orange County school districts. Their valiant efforts culminated in the landmark court case, Mendez v. Westminster. In 1947, the Ninth Federal Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the segregation of Mexican and Mexican-American students in Orange County schools violated the Fourteenth Amendment and was unconstitutional. This ruling paved the way for Brown v. Board of Education seven years later.

“Ms. Mendez spent her life fighting intolerance and was finally recognized for her efforts in 2010, when she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Obama.

“I am personally grateful for Ms. Mendez’s strength, courage, and perseverance. Without her, my children and I may not have had access to the same schools and opportunities as other students. I am proud to say that all of my children graduated from Santa Ana schools thanks to Ms. Mendez’s brave actions 73 years ago.”
