An armed sexual assault suspect was fatally shot by Anaheim police officers

ANAHEIM, Calif. (October 4, 2023) – Anaheim Police Officers attempting to arrest a sexual assault suspect fatally shoot a 29-year-old man. A knife was recovered at the scene.

On Tuesday, October 3, 2023, at about 1 p.m., Anaheim Police Officers attempted to arrest a felony sexual assault suspect, 29-year-old Luis Munoz of Anaheim, on the 300 block of W. Orangewood Ave. Munoz ran from Officers, causing Officers to pursue him to the area of Harbor Blvd. and Orangewood Ave., where a confrontation occurred between Munoz and several Anaheim Police Officers. An officer-involved shooting occurred, and Munoz was struck at least once by police gunfire.

Munoz was treated at the scene by Anaheim Police Officers and personnel from Anaheim Fire and Rescue. Despite their efforts, Munoz was pronounced deceased at the scene.

A large knife, believed to belong to Munoz, was recovered at the scene. No officers were injured as a result of the shooting.

The Orange County District Attorney’s Office responded to initiate the investigation into the circumstances of the officer-involved shooting. Anaheim PD Homicide Detectives, the Anaheim PD Major Incident Review Team (MIRT), Anaheim PD Internal Affairs, and personnel from the Anaheim Police Review Board (PRB) and Office of Independent Review (OIR) also responded to the incident.
