Advisory: Santa Ana PD Officers Arrest Suspect For Assault With A Deadly Weapon And Robbery During A Violent Rampage

On Wednesday, 07/19/2017 at approximately 2:30 p.m., SAPD police officers responded to a fight near the intersection of Bristol and Warner. By the time the officers arrived, the suspect, Stephen Allan Edwards, 28-years old, had committed two batteries, a robbery and an assault with a deadly weapon.

The assault with a deadly weapon was against a Santa Ana Code Enforcement officer who had intervened in the robbery. The suspect tried to stab her with a knife through her car window. The code enforcement officer was not injured.

When the police units arrived, the suspect ran through the southeast parking lot carrying a large metal pipe. The officers cornered him, at which time the suspect held the pipe like a baseball bat and challenged our officers to fight. A Taser was deployed, but was ineffective. This allowed the suspect to strike one of our officers on the upper arm with the pipe, knocking him to the ground and fracturing his arm. The suspect ran and was tasered several more times before a baton was used to knock him to the ground and he was handcuffed. The suspect continued to resist even after being placed in the back of a patrol car. He was able to head-butt one of the officers twice in the face while in the back seat causing facial injuries to a second officer.
