9th Annual Dia de los Muertos event drew thousands to downtown Santa Ana

Thousands of people gathered downtown Saturday afternoon for an annual Dia de los Muertos/Day of the Dead celebration that has mushroomed in size over the past nine years, according to the O.C. Register.

The event was masterminded by Jackie and Rudy Cordova, owners of Calacas and the new Calacas Cafe.  This was the Ninth Annual Noche de Altares event.  Check out Calacas’ Facebook page for pictures of yesterday’s event.

In related news, Belinda De La Libertad has started a new website called “Altares Por Siempre” which will gather pictures of Day of the Dead altars, to forever commemorate the dearly departed.

Here are a few pictures taken at yesterday’s Day of the Dead event:

  • Why do you have to be such a hack? This event began nine years ago, put on by El Centro Cultural de Mexico. Calacas and El Centro put on this event together since about 5 years ago. Rudy and Jackie are great people and have served as volunteers and on the board of El Centro. Please don't try to erase our history or make it your own. El Centro Cultural de Mexico is a strong a vibrant contributor to our city.
Plus Rudy and Jackie make the best Don Benjamin Sandwiches in the world, gulp that down with a Berry Loca like your Momma smoothie.
