A mother killed and her juvenile daughter in critical condition after a suspected drunk driver collides into their vehicle, according to the Orange Police Department.
On Sunday night, just after 8:00 p.m., patrol officers and Orange City Fire Department first responders arrived at a multi-casualty incident at the intersection of Tustin Street and Collins Avenue.
An intoxicated man was driving a Chevy Equinox south on Tustin Street approaching a red light at Collins Avenue. A Toyota RAV4 was traveling west on Collins Avenue through the green light at Tustin Street. The Chevy collided into the side of the Toyota killing a woman from Orange, Maria Minerva Arroyo, who was in the front passenger seat.
Her daughter, Jayleen Fragoso, who was sitting directly behind her, was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.
Another juvenile passenger and the man who was driving the Toyota were transported to local hospitals in serious but stable condition.
The unlicensed drunk driver was transported to a hospital but has no serious injuries. During a preliminary alcohol breath test, the suspect’s blood alcohol level was more than double the legal limit.
After further investigation, officers identified the suspect as 18-year-old Roberto Noe Monfil Xitlama from Orange. He was driving without a license.
Monfil Xitlama was arrested for gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and was booked at OCJ.
The Traffic Unit responded and assumed the investigation. The intersection will be closed for approximately six hours. Anyone with information can contact Det. A. Rocha at 714-744-7342.
Editor’s Note – whoever served that liquior to the underage Monfil Xitlama is a lot of trouble and should face jail time as well.
