Two Century H.S. baseball players shot, one fatally, in Santa Ana

On Thursday, April 28, 2022, at 07:23 P.M., Santa Ana Police officers responded to the west alley of 1400 S. Minnie Street regarding reports of a shooting.

Officers located an unresponsive adult male inside a vehicle, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds to his upper torso. A second adult male victim was located at the scene with a gunshot wound to his upper torso.

Orange County Fire Authority arrived on scene and transported both victims to a local hospital. One of the victims was listed in stable condition, however, the other victim was pronounced deceased.

The circumstances or motive surrounding the shooting are currently being investigated. The Orange County Coroner’s Office has identified the deceased victim as Roberto Izelo (18) of Tustin.

Media reports indicate that the shooting victims were cousins and are student-athletes on Santa Ana’s Century High School baseball team.

A detailed description of the suspect was not made available by the SAPD, but a video clip released by the SAPD showed the suspect being sought. The suspect was in dark-colored clothing crossing a street among slow-moving traffic.

Detectives are attempting to identify and locate any witnesses who can shed light on this incident.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call SAPD Homicide Section Detectives at (714) 245-8390, or Orange County Crime Stoppers at 1-855-TIP-OCCS. This case is eligible for the Gang Reward Program.
