Theatre Out presents The Violet Hour by Chris Richard Greenberg

October 28 – November 19

Theatre Out, Orange County’s gay and lesbian theatre, is proud to present Richard Greenberg’s comedy-drama The Violet Hour. John Pace Seavering is a new publisher faced with the dilemma of having too many potential books to publish and not enough money to publish them all. Of the utmost concern to John: if he can only publish one book does he choose the memoirs of his African American jazz singer lover, Jessie Brewster, or the somewhat incoherent volumes submitted by his best friend? The dilemma complicates itself even more when a strange machine arrives at the office. This machine produces pages from books not yet written and shows John very clearly how important his decision really is as the consequences of publishing or not publishing each book become clear.

The New York Times raves that The Violet Hour is, “a wonderful new work…of serious whimsy, of glittering style and dark substance…” And the Chicago Sun-Times says, “Richard Greenberg’s luminous, mysterious, emotionally churning tragicomedy, The Violet Hour, is a wondrous piece of work…This is the kind of bewitching play that makes theater a world unto itself.”

“Richard Greenberg is one of American Theatre’s masterful wordsmiths,” commented David C. Carnevale, Theatre Out’s Managing Director. “Those words are brought to life by an amazing cast under the skullful and passionate eyes of director Frankie Marrone.”

“The Violet Hour is a unique story that blends elements of poetry, comedy, drama and a tinge of science fiction to take the audience on a journey that questions the impact each of us has on the world we live in,” commented Joey Baital, Theatre Out Producer.
