The Santa Ana Black Historical Society will co-host a Juneteenth celebration on 6/27 in Huntington Beach

Juneteenth Celebration on Saturday June 27, 2015 at Huntington Beach Central Park

Huntington Beach – The inaugural Juneteenth Celebration in Huntington Beach will be held Saturday, June 27, 2015 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. at Huntington Beach Central Park. The event commemorates the abolition of slavery in the United States. The day will be filled with learning and fun for the whole family and will be enjoyed by people of all ethnicities.

Juneteenth started on June 19, 1865 in Galveston, Texas by African Americans to celebrate the end of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth is now celebrated throughout the USA. This year marks the 150th Anniversary Celebration.

OC Learning Black History, with support from the Santa Ana Black Historical Society, is hosting the first community-wide Juneteenth Celebration in Huntington Beach, California. Barbara Junious, Executive Director of OC Learning Black History is a long-time resident in Huntington Beach and says “ Everyone is invited to come out to Huntington Beach Central Park on Saturday to enjoy a good old-fashioned, traditional Juneteenth with family and friends and make new friends. We want to share our heritage and history with the whole community”.

The entertainment will feature a wide variety of acts including, Dembrebrah Drum and Dance Ensemble (West African), DJ James “ShaSha” Stapleton, New Spirit Baptist Church choir, Chester Whitmore (tap dance), Travis “Incidents” Lane (Rap & Techno), David Hilal (African drummer),Frank Arcadio (R & B), Passion y Tumbao (Salsa Dancers) and more artists.

Great food will also be offered at the food booths: Andre’s Southern Kitchen, Jav’s BBQ, New Orleans Bill, Funhouse Desserts, and Unforgettable Lemonade. Union Bank and other businesses will have a booth. There will also be retail vendors (Artistic Flow, Ms. Prissy Purses, Divi Jack’s and Yogi’s Accessories, Just Chill Boutique, Crown and Glory Accessories, Nancy’s Hats) and community group booths with 100 Black Men of Orange County, Orange County Heritage Council, Black in OC (BNOC) and the Orange County Section National Council of Negro Women, Inc. (OC-NCNW).

An opportunity drawing will be held as a fundraiser for OC Learning Black History classes. Prizes will include gift baskets, gift cards and more.

OC Learning Black History is a community based education organization. The purpose of the Black History classes lectures and events are to teach the history of African-Americans to students of all ages and cultures and acknowledge the contributions made in the United States of America. Classes are held every other Saturday at the Huntington Beach, Michael A. Rodgers Senior Center, 1706 W. Orange Avenue, Huntington Beach CA 92648.
