The City of Santa Ana wants you to report overgrown parkways in our neighborhoods

April showers do bring flowers, and with the rains come tall grass and weeds. Now is the time to pull out the lawn care tools and begin to maintain your parkways consistently. With the strong rains Santa Ana experienced this early spring, parkways have experienced strong growth of grass and weeds as well.

Maintenance of parkways, including, watering, mowing grass, trimming plants and weed removal is the responsibility of the adjacent property owner (except for City street trees). A parkway is the area between the curb and sidewalk and is a long planting strip sometimes referred to as sidewalk strip or parking strip. The parkway must be kept in a clean and neat condition and free from objectionable matter such as overgrown grass, weeds or obstacles, which may pose a hazard. In many areas of the City, the parkway is a City-owned right-of-way; however, the maintenance is still the responsibility of the property owner.

Clean and maintained parkways are important to neighborhoods and the City as a whole and offer many benefits such as:

  • Neighborhood pride by enhancing the visual curb appeal of your home and neighborhoods;
  • Increase property value;
  • Improve safety by buffering pedestrians on the sidewalk from cars in the street;
  • Provide space for healthy street tree growth and provide shade that reduce energy costs and other environmental benefits; and
  • Prevent water run-off into the streets, allowing percolation to the groundwater table.

Every year, the City’s Environmental Sanitation Inspectors respond to hundreds of parkway maintenance issues and provide reminder notices to property owners regarding their maintenance responsibility with the goal of improving the visual appearance of your neighborhood. Your support in maintaining your parkway in your neighborhood keeps Santa Ana beautiful and is appreciated by the entire community.

• Orgullo de vecindario al mejorar el atractivo visual de su hogar y vecindarios;
• Aumenta el valor de la propiedad;
• Mejora la seguridad amortiguando a los peatones en la banqueta de los carros en la calle;
