The 2012 O.C. Dept. of Education, Area One, Social Media Report Card

SANTA ANA – Public school officials often talk about the need to connect with parents, but do our local public school districts really walk the walk, when it comes to communicating with parents?

Art Pedroza, a candidate for the Orange County Board of Education, Area One, noticed in 2010 that the Santa Ana Unified School District’s website did not include a common, and popular, tool for instantly translating their site to other languages.  The district corrected that oversight once Pedroza brought up the issue during his campaign in 2010 for the SAUSD School Board.

Now Pedroza, a community college teacher who has also been publishing blogs in Orange County since 2003, has reviewed the websites pertaining to the public school districts that are in Area One, which include the Garden Grove Unified School District, the Fountain Valley School District, the Huntington Beach Union High School District, the Santa Ana Unified School District and part of the Tustin Unified School District.  Below are his findings:

Gold Award, Best in Class

The Tustin Unified School District’s website has a built-in translator program; a Twitter feed; they make email addresses for key administrators available; and they provide email addresses for their elected school board members.  Suggested improvements include setting up a Facebook page and an RSS feed.  Grade: A-
