Solorio’s campaign for the 34th State Senate District is heating up

Former Assemblyman Jose Solorio, a Democrat who currently serves on the Rancho Santiago Community College District’s Board of Education,  formally announced his campaign for the 34th State Senate District seat that is currently held by Lou Correa.  The seat opens up in 2014.  Republican O.C. Supervisor Janet Nguyen, who screwed up CalOptima this year, has also announced that she is running for the 34th.

It is my understanding that failed Assembly candidate Julio Perez, who has never won any political office before, may enter the race for the 34th just to try to make Solorio lose.  Let’s hope labor figures out that Nguyen would be an even bigger nightmare as a State Senator than she already is as a County Supervisor.

Solorio sent out a campaign update today to his supporters – and from the sounds of it he is going to be tough to beat.  Let me be up front here – I have already made a decision to endorse Solorio.  Here is his campaign update:

Dear Friends,

A quick update regarding our Senate 2014 campaign. All positive news!

Thanks to the generosity of my supporters and hard work of my fundraising team, we now have over $400,000 cash-on-hand. Given that the election is in 2014, it provides us a very strong start. The 34th Senate District is open in 2014 because Senator Lou Correa terms out then.

As a result of several factors (e.g., Presidential election year, new online voter registration, and political trends in the county and state), the 34th Senate District now has a 2% Democratic voter registration edge over Republicans, and that figure will continue to rise.

In addition to continuing to spend substantial time in the cities I’ve represented in the State Assembly (i.e., Anaheim, Garden Grove, and Santa Ana), I’ve been able to develop many new relationships in the communities that I haven’t represented and are now also part of the 34th Senate District (i.e., Fountain Valley, Huntington Beach, Los Alamitos, Rossmoor, Seal Beach, Westminster and part of Long Beach).

This Senate election will be one of the most competitive in 2014, so I am very thankful for all the endorsements and gestures of support that I have received so far. If you’d like to help the campaign, please email me at Jose@JoseSolorio.com or call me at (714) 514-6233.

Onward to Victory,

Jose Solorio
Community College Trustee
State Assemblyman Emeritus
