Senator Lou Correa Honors 9-1-1 Youth Heroes and Dispatchers Heroes

Sacramento—Senator Lou Correa (D-Santa Ana) joined NFL legend and national chairman of 9-1-1 for Kids, Tim Brown, to honor youth heroes and dispatchers heroes at the State Capitol in recognition of those who gallantly and intrepidly called 9-1-1 to help save a life or report a crime.

“As a parent, I appreciate how important it is to teach our young children on how and when to call 9-1-1 in an emergency. Teaching parents, children and senior citizens about 9-1-1 correctly can and does save lives,” said Correa.

The 9-1-1 Local Heroes is bestowed to an individual (youth or dispatcher who processes the call) who distinguishes himself/herself by preventing the loss of life or property when they use 9-1-1. The 9-1-1 Local Heroes, was created in 1999 in collaboration with California State Legislature. It is now an international awards program.

Those awarded today are: Tureik Blake 7 years old, Oakland), Connor Malone (12 years old, Davis), Heather Ngyuen (9 years old, Milpitas), Alexa Hile Lewis (8 years old, San Ramon); Dispatchers: Katie Welch (CHP), Shannon McCarthy (Davis Police Dept.), Robert Vega (San Ramon Valley Fire); K-9 Heroes: Officer Randy Van Dusen (CHP) and Bodie the Police Dog.

“Nearly 50 percent of all 9-1-1 calls made in California are not emergencies, which is unacceptable. We must do better to educate young people about the when it is appropriate place a 9-1-1 call, lives depend on it,” added Correa.
