Community: TAX AMNESTY PROGRAM DEADLINE FAST APPROACHING FOR NEW AND CURRENT BUSINESS OWNERS

SANTA ANA, CA (July 5, 2012) – The City of Santa Ana is making its final call to new and current business owners to sign up for the Business Tax Amnesty Program. The deadline for participating in this one time only program is Wednesday, July 31, 2012.

Anyone doing business or registered as a business or corporation in the City of Santa Ana must have a business license. Existing licensed businesses that may have underreported or misreported their gross receipts or other assessment criteria qualify if they act fast in order to avoid paying penalties and interest on current and back year taxes.

All a business owner has to do is call today and reserve an appointment to qualify before the closing date. Spanish speaking assistance is available.

“We sent letters to about 12,500 businesses and independent contractors that may not have known the need for a license to do business in the City,” said Francisco Gutierrez, Finance Director for Santa Ana. “This has all been about educating the business community and allowing them to meet their civic obligations without fear of being punished for lack of knowledge or honest mistakes.”

One Santa Ana business owner agreed, “It’s better for my business to have the license to operate freely and get up to date on what I owe than it affecting my credit for not paying or the fees going higher due to penalties.” Getting a business license through this program may cost as little as $50 depending on the kind business. Holding companies and pass-through entities may qualify for a minimum tax fee.

“We have limited appointments available, the sooner business owners call the easier it is”, said Eddie Duque, Tax Amnesty Project Manager. The program has collected more than $1.5 million in business license fees from businesses and independent contractors that were unlicensed or misreported their business license taxes. The City has helped more than 4,000 new businesses get licensed to operate and grow their bottom line.
