Santa Ana man sentenced for sexually assaulting a janitor in Irvine

Eduardo Godoy Gonzalez, a 25-year-old Santa Ana man, was sentenced on Friday, March 24, to seven years to life in prison for attempting to sexually assault a woman cleaning offices in Irvine.

Gonzalez attacked the janitor at about 1:30 a.m. on Feb. 6, 2019, in an office building located at 17877 Von Karman Avenue.

Gonzalez was given credit for 1,733 days he already spent in jail while he was awaiting his trial. He also was ordered to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life. That will prevent him from living too close to schools in the future.

The victim was confronted by Gonzalez, who was carrying a skateboard, according to the OCDA prosecutor. He asked her in Spanish, “Only you here?”

The victim then asked him if he worked there. He responded, “I have condoms, take off your clothes,” and offered to pay for sex. according to the prosecutor.

The victim said she had children and rejected his demands, prompting him to pull out a fake gun and point it at her. He then said he was going to kill her.

Gonzalez then grabbed her by the neck and at gunpoint pushed her about 20 feet into a conference room, where the two struggled for several minutes. Gonzalez tumbled over an ottoman and dropped the gun, while the victim yelled for help to get the attention of her supervisor. The woman then ran for help in the next-door office building.

Video surveillance caught Gonzales as he bumped into a glass door of the building, so the authorities had it tested for DNA. Police also asked the public for help, and someone called investigators and identified Gonzalez.

We cannot imagine that Gonzalez will be enjoying his stay in prison and hopefully he will stay there as long as possible.

California has passed AB 547, which requires janitorial employers to provide in-person instructor-led training in preventing sexual violence and harassment at least once every two years.
