Santa Ana man convicted for fatally shooting a young man who was in his car

On Saturday, May 19, 2018, at approximately 03:40 AM, the Santa Ana Police Department received a report of a shooting victim at the 3100 block of S. Main Street. SAPD Officers, along with Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA), responded to the scene and located an adult victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body. OCFA transported the victim to a local trauma center where he was pronounced deceased.

After an extensive investigation, SAPD Homicide Detectives discovered the victim, Bryan Steubing and a friend were hanging out in a parked vehicle when the gunman approached the driver’s side and opened fire with a large caliber pistol. Detectives identified Carlos Gonzalez of Santa Ana as the suspect in the shooting.

Gonzalez was arrested by SAPD Homicide Detectives on June 10, 2018, and booked at the Santa Ana Jail for PC 187(a) – Murder.

Gonzalez stood trial in Orange County Superior Court on October 5, 2023. On October 19, 2023, the jury found Gonzalez guilty of 1st Degree Murder. He is scheduled for a sentencing hearing on January 19, 2024. “This is another example of the diligent, exhaustive, and professional work that is conducted by our Homicide Detectives,” said Chief David Valentin.

The case was prosecuted by Deputy DA Anna McIntire of the Orange County District Attorney’s Office—Homicide Unit before Judge Donahue.
