Santa Ana is seeking to pay an artist up to $25K to paint a downtown mural

City of Santa Ana

Community Alert: Downtown Mural Project – Call for Artist

The City of Santa Ana announces the “Downtown Mural Project,” an exciting opportunity for artists to contribute to the continued development of the City’s historic downtown. As part of a broader garage improvement plan, which also includes the installation of LED lighting and automated payment equipment, the City will make available $50,000 for artists to create murals on public parking garage façades. These funds are available to assist with project-related expenses, such as materials, liability insurance, city permits, and artist’s fees. The maximum grant amount for an individual project is $25,000. Interested candidates should respond to the Request for Qualifications (RFQ) by June 30, 2016.

The most qualified artists will be selected by a panel appointed by the City’s Arts and Culture Commission. Once selected, artists will be asked to develop a mural proposal and return to the Commission for design and budget approval. Prior to installation, artists must receive final approval from the City Council.

The goals of the project are to:

1. Create a sense of place within the downtown
2. Contribute to a sense of community within the downtown and the City
3. Strengthen Santa Ana’s identity as a regional center for the arts

  • WHat a waste of funds when they are complaining about money. First those BONUSES to Cavazos and now this? 25K? Really. One of those starving artist will do it for less than 5K.....Our city leaders have no common sense.

  • $25,000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!??????????????? WTF????????? Cit council always talking about financial recovery but that we have to be mindful of expenditures...WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS PEOPLE??????????????????????????? Most people in SA don't make that much in a year....

  • Why doesn't the City restore the amazing murals it's already got? Geez, the Emigdio Vasquez murals are historical, fine art in public places.
