City of Santa Ana, Downtown Orange County
Community Alert: Santa Ana is Awarded $2.5M in Grant Funding for 7 Highway Safety Projects
SANTA ANA, CA (November 21, 2013) – The City of Santa Ana is committed to improving traffic safety. The Public Works Agency in collaboration with other City Agencies, the community, and with support of the City Council is always seeking ways to address concerns by pedestrians related to their safety. Therefore it is with delight that the City announces receipt of seven (7) Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) grants totaling about $2.5 million. HSIP is a federal program that funds safety related improvements.
The grant funded projects will include: 1) The Citywide installation of signal pedestrian heads that have a count-down timer informing pedestrians how much time they have left to safely cross the street. 2) Installation of high visibility strobe light indicators at 8 existing crossings that alert drivers of pedestrians in the crosswalks. 3) Updating signage on arterials streets to provide better night time reflectivity. 4) Installation of left turn traffic signal arrows at four intersections (Westminster Ave/ Clinton St, Edinger Ave/Sullivan St, 17th St/English St, MacArthur Blvd/Plaza Drive). Collaboration with the community led to many locations being evaluated, warranted and prioritized, which then resulted in the grant award.
Environmental work and design of these project is tentatively scheduled to start in mid 2014, with construction starting in early 2015.
