CONGRESSWOMAN LORETTA SANCHEZ DEMANDS A VOTE ON COMPREHENSIVE IMMIGRATION REFORM

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez (CA-46) today signed a discharge petition demanding that comprehensive immigration reform be brought to a vote. The petition would force a vote on H.R. 15, the bipartisan Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act, legislation that would help secure our border, protect our workers, unite our families, provide an earned pathway to citizenship and create jobs.

“I am signing this discharge petition because enough is enough – the American people demand a vote on comprehensive immigration reform. It’s been almost a year since the Senate passed this bipartisan package and report after report has demonstrated the economic imperative of reform,” said Rep. Sanchez. “I am demanding a vote because we’ve been saying ‘the time is now’ for too long. Action on immigration reform is overdue and I am ready to put the pressure on every member to take a stand.”

Despite widespread support from law enforcement, faith leaders, the business community and the American people, Republican leadership continues to hold this important legislation hostage. A report from the Congressional Budget Office released on Tuesday found that the House legislation, H.R. 15 would reduce the deficit by $900 billion over the next two decades – including $200 billion in the first decade alone. The bill has 200 co-sponsors, including 3 Republicans.

  • "Democrats introduced a discharge petition that requires the signature of 218 for legislative action, an effort that stands little chance of success as Republicans, even those supportive of immigration legislation, are unwilling to defy their leadership. By the end of Wednesday's House session, 149 of the chamber's 199 Democrats had signed the petition."
