OCDA HOSTS 14TH ANNUAL SUMMER YOUTH EDUCATION CONFERENCE FOR STUDENTS INTERESTED IN LAW ENFORCEMENT

SANTA ANA – Orange County high school students will have the opportunity next week to get a behind-the-scenes look at what it’s like to be a prosecutor, police detective, and judge during the 14th annual Summer Youth Education Conference. This weeklong program will begin on Monday, Aug. 5, 2013, at 8:30 a.m. and will include 35 to 40 hours of hands-on-activities, culminating in a mock trial and graduation ceremony on Friday, Aug. 9, 2013.

“This program is a great way for young people in our community to learn about the criminal justice system,” said District Attorney Tony Rackauckas. “Working with local teens is extremely important in helping these kids choose a positive path. Some of these students may serve our community and become the next generation of prosecutors, police officers, and judges.”

The Summer Youth Education Conference gives students interested in law enforcement a better understanding of the criminal justice system. Students will have an opportunity to visit numerous government agencies and meet with criminal justice professionals. The participants will visit the Santa Ana Police Department, Ronald Reagan Federal Building and Courthouse, Orange County Sheriff’s Department Training Facility and Coroner’s Office, and Orange County Crime Laboratory. Educational workshops will be presented by a police investigator, prosecutor, community agencies, and other criminal justice professionals.

This year, 27 students from 13 school districts throughout the County were selected to participate, including students from Santa Ana, Orange, and Irvine Unified school districts.

Applications for the 2014 program will be accepted between Feb. 11 and April 11, 2014, from students who exhibit an interest in learning about the legal and criminal justice system. Anyone interested in applying for the 2014 conference can visit the Orange County District Attorney website at www.orangecountyda.com and select “Summer Youth Education Conference,” under Education and Resources. The program is open to high school students between the ages of 16 and 18 years old.
