SANTA ANA, Calif. – Deputy District Attorney Craig Cazares of the Orange County District Attorney’s Office (OCDA) was named Chair of the Orange County Bar Association’s (OCBA) Criminal Law section for 2018.
The OCDA is the largest law firm in Orange County and employs over 250 attorneys who review and prosecute cases ranging from misdemeanor DUIs to special circumstances murders in over 34 cities in Orange County. The OCBA is one of the largest voluntary bar associations in California, with over 9,000 memberswho meet regularly in sections and committees dedicated to discussing several areas of law. The OCBA Criminal Law section serves as a forum for open discussions, networking, and continuing legal education for the practice of criminal law.
Cazares was elected by fellow section members as the Criminal Law section’s Chair-Elect in 2017 and he progressed to be the section’s Chair for 2018. He joined the OCDA in December 1990 after earning his Juris Doctor degree from the University of San Diego School of Law. Cazares has held various assignments throughout his career with the OCDA including vertical assignments to the Major Fraud Unit and the Family Protection Unit, where he specialized in the prosecution of elder and dependent adult cases. Cazares is presently assigned as a senior member of the Felony Charging Unit at the Harbor Justice Center in Newport Beach.
Yesterday, the OCBA Criminal Law Section held its first meeting at Orange County Superior Court (OCSC) Central Justice Center entitled, “No Vet Left Behind: A Practical View of How Sentencing Alternatives Work for Veterans with Criminal Cases in Orange County.” The Honorable Mary Kreber Varipapa and Commissioner Edward Hall of OCSC, both of whom have presided over Veterans Treatment Court and Military Diversion Court, discussed the laws and rights affecting veterans in the criminal justice system. The event was also moderated by Deputy District Attorney Anne Selin.
