Newport Beach man charged with firing a gun at a police officer

WHO: Scott Jay Abraham, 43, Newport Beach

WHAT: Was charged today with two felony counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm on a peace officer and one felony count of discharging a firearm with gross negligence. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 12 years in state prison.

WHEN: Arraignment today, July 15, 2014. The time is to be determined.

WHERE: Department CJ-1, Central Jail, Santa Ana

The Orange County District Attorney’s Office (OCDA) is investigating the officer-involved shooting incident involving this defendant. It is the policy of the OCDA to not release further details until the end of the investigation.

Arrested: Scott Jay Abraham, Male White, 43-year-old resident of Newport Beach

On Friday, July 11 at approximately 9:43 p.m., the Newport Beach Police Department’s Dispatch Center received a 911 call of multiple gunshots heard in the 4600 block of Seashore Drive. Officers responded to the scene and began to establish a perimeter. The officers then observed the suspect as he exited a residence onto a beach-facing patio and fired at least one additional round.

Two officers returned fire, striking the suspect. The suspect was taken into custody and transported to Western Medical Center. He is currently listed in critical condition.

No officers were injured during the incident. The investigation into the suspect’s actions is ongoing. Anyone with further information about this incident is encouraged to contact Detective Kyle Cammack at 949-644-3779 or Sergeant Keith Krallman at 949-644-3764.

The Orange County District Attorney’s Office will conduct the investigation into the officer-involved shooting. Additional information will be released as the investigation allows.
