COMMITMENT TO PUBLIC SAFETY: OUR NUMBER ONE PRIORITY

The City recently received a $1.2 million federal Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) grant to hire 10 new police officers. The Santa Ana Police Department has received national attention for its success in reducing crime using community oriented policing philosophies. In 2009, the City received its first federal COPS grant. These monies allowed the city to invest in smart technologies that spurred efficiencies and improved the effectiveness of our police personnel. The Department focused on expanding partnerships with both the local residents and community organizations as well as other law enforcement agencies. Task forces were established in specific neighborhoods to work with property owners to eliminate visual blight and to bring in additional resources from non-profits and other city departments. These efforts helped prevent criminal activity from occurring and dramatically improved the quality of life in our neighborhoods.

The result has been a year after year decline in crime and a nationally ranking of Santa Ana being the safest city for its size in America. In 2014, Forbes magazine listed Santa Ana as the fourth safest city for a city of its size, largely due to a 45% decrease in gang homicides that same year.

However, our work is not done and we maintain our commitment to making public safety our top priority and to through additional collaborations and community engagement.

Lastly, I recently read a wonderful article about how gang activity is decreasing urban cities across America. The author cites Santa Ana by example. I’ve enclosed the link to the article for your review.
