Homeland Security tried to arrest a suspect in Santa Ana early this morning but then let him go

On February 25, 2020 at 6:30 am, the Santa Ana Police Department (SAPD) received a call from agents of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) pertaining to their actions in the east alley of 835 S. Townsend.

SAPD was informed that DHS had performed a traffic stop on an individual wanted for a warrant. DHS requested SAPD to respond to assist with crowd and traffic control as the individual was refusing to surrender to DHS agents.

As is the case with any request from all law enforcement agencies, SAPD responded to the location. Upon arrival, SAPD supervision was informed DHS was attempting to arrest the individual for a warrant pertaining to an immigration offense.

SAPD notified DHS that the department’s involvement would only be crowd and traffic control and no members of the Santa Ana Police Department would become involved in any immigration enforcement matters.

During the police department’s involvement, a single male attempted to breach law enforcement containment and was detained.

A records check on that individual revealed a valid warrant out of North Orange County Municipal Court for Driving Under the Influence. That male who breached containment was arrested for that warrant based on state charges.

After a period of time, DHS notified SAPD that they would not be arresting the original individual for his outstanding immigration issue and all law enforcement left the scene.
