GET THERE, GREENER – RIDE THE BUS WITH THE ENC AND OCTA

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., February 22, 2012 – As the cost of gas steadily rises throughout Orange County, reaching an average of $4.12 per gallon according to www.orangecountygasprices.com as of February 22, the Environmental Nature Center has partnered with the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) to put together a program focusing on greener alternatives to driving personal vehicles.

On Thursday, March 1 at 6 p.m., the ENC will host its “Getting there, Greener” program, alongside OCTA representatives, in an effort to get people out of their cars and onto a bus, train, bicycle, or into a ridesharing program.

“I think people are interested in riding the bus, but they’re intimidated by it,” said Director of Education Lori Whalen. “This program will show participants how easy and inexpensive it is to ride the bus – and they’ll receive a free bus pass so they can try it out!”

The OCTA’s countywide bus system has 77 routes and 6,200 bus stops to get every rider to just about any place in Orange County. Program attendees will learn bus-riding basics – how to ride, reading a schedule, riding tips, using the bike rack, as well as safety and security.

All guests of the program that complete a quick survey will receive a promotional one-day bus pass courtesy of the OCTA.

For more information or to RSVP for this event call 949-645-8489, or visit www.ENCenter.org. The ENC is located at 1601 16th Street in Newport Beach.

The ENC’s 3 1/2 acre outdoor classroom displays 15 native plant communities that range from a desert, to a freshwater marsh, to a redwood forest.
