Garden Grove teen arrested after a fatal suspected DUI crash

Landon Hazelwood, a 19-year-old teenage resident of Garden Grove, was arrested on suspicion of DUI after a fatal crash that killed his two passengers and resulted in the closure of southbound lanes on the 5 Freeway through Santa Fe Springs this morning.

The CHP received calls about the crash at 1:39 a.m. The crash occured just north of Carmenita Road when a Honda Accord slammed into a big rig that was stopped on the shoulder of the freeway, according to the CHP.

The CHP is not clear as to why the big rig was stopped but Hazelkwood, the driver of the Honda, drifted onto the shoulder while driving at a high rate of speed, before colliding with the back of the truck.

The truck driver escaped injury but two male passengers in the Honda died including one victim who was ejected from the vehicle. That is usually a telltale sign that the victim was not using his seatbelt when the collision occured.

Hazelwood was taken to UCI Medical Center where he was later arrested for DUI. He is now in police custody.

If you are convicted of a felony DUI causing injury, you will face up to three years in county jail and up to $5,000 in court fines. Your driving privilege may be suspended for up to three years, according to the Law Firm of Wallin & Klarich.
