Eight OCFA wildfire handcrew members were injured after a rollover crash in Irvine

On Thursday, September 19, eight OCFA Handcrew members were returning from battling the Airport Fire when they were involved in a rollover crash on the 241 freeway in Irvine.

The accident occured at 6:50 p.m. on Thursday night. The crews were finishing a 12-hour shift. Their truck swerved to avoid a ladder on the 241 Freeway, hit the guard rail and flipped on to its side.

Eight members were injured, six were critically injured and transported to area hospitals. One of the indured was transported by an OCFA helicopter to a local hospital.

“Many of the injured are going to be hospitalized for a while,” according to Orange County Fire Authority Chief Brian Fennessy, who spoke at a news comference. He also said that of the eight firefighters injured in the crash, six were taken to local trauma centers and all six are still hospitalized ranging from stable to critical condition.

The Orange County Professional Firefighters Association Local 3631 together with the Orange County Fire Authority are working to ensure that these members and their families have the care and resources they need in the long road to recovery.
