Andrew Do’s lead over former State Senator Lou Correa, in the First District Special Election, has narrowed today to 85, according to the Orange County Registrar of Voters.
It is thought that the Registrar will finish counting the final provisional and late absentee votes tomorrow, by end of day.
We don’t expect that Correa will regain the lead as the Viet turnout on Election Day was very high while Latinos, once again, mostly failed to vote.
If Do retains the seat, on the Orange County Board of Supervisors, it will be a real slap to the face of the Democratic Party of Orange County, which last year bungled the 65th Assembly District and the 34th State Senate District. Furthermore it will mean that Orange County’s blue donut hole is no longer that blue.
The only top Latino Democrat Legislator left in Central Orange County is U.S. Rep. Loretta Sanchez. This puts Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido on the map as the top male Latino elected official in Central Orange County.
One has to wonder at this point if Pulido would have been a stronger candidate for the O.C. Board of Supervisors than Correa. Unfortunately the head of the Orange County Employees Association, Nick Berardino, is still mad because Pulido did not support Berardino’s pick for the Board of Supervisors, Tom Umberg, several years ago. Ironically that was the election that saw former Garden Grove City Councilwoman Janet Nguyen ascend first to the Board of Supervisors and now to the State Senate.
