Correa honors fallen California Peace Officers

CORREA HONORS FALLEN CALIFORNIA PEACE OFFICERS

SACRAMENTO, CA – Today, the California State Senate unanimously approved Senate Concurrent Resolution (SCR), 39 authored by Senator Correa. This measure designates May 6, 2013 as California Peace Officers’ Memorial Day, in commemoration of those noble officers who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty.

“We should never forget that enforcing the law and ensuring public safety is dangerous work.  It has been tragically shown too many times over the years, officers are sometimes killed or wounded while performing their duty for the communities they serve,” Correa said. “Though Californians are indebted to our peace officers each day of the week, we make particular note of their bravery and dedication on California Peace Officers’ Memorial Day.”

SCR 39 recognizes 2 peace officers who were killed in 2012 in defense of California comminutes. These brave officers are:

• Deputy Robert L. Paris, Jr., Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department, End of Watch: April 12, 2012.
• Officer Kenyon M. Youngstrom, California Highway Patrol, Contra Costa, End of Watch: September 5, 2012

SCR 39 also provides recognition of officers who were killed in defense of their communities in prior years, including:

• Officer Daniel C. Clark, San Bernardino Police Department, End of Watch: November 3, 2011.
• Inspector Brian D. Olcomendy, San Francisco Police Department, End of Watch: July 26, 2003.
• Officer Robert J. Quirk, California Highway Patrol, Red Bluff, End of Watch: April 11, 1971.
• Sheriff William Elam, Placer County Sheriff’s Department, End of Watch: October 1, 1951.
• Deputy Constable Arthur D. Miner, Butte County Sheriff’s Department, End of Watch: October 24, 1934.
• Officer Timothy Duane, Oakland Police Department, End of Watch: April 18, 1930.
• Deputy Constable J. Edward Brown, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, End of Watch: September 14, 1924.
• Deputy Ray C. Bogart, Lassen County Sheriff’s Department, End of Watch: January 11, 1915.
• Deputy Constable Charles A. DeMoranville, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, End of Watch: January 4, 1909.
• Deputy William F. Edwards, Mono County Sheriff’s Department, End of Watch: April 29, 1907.

Correa, who serves as the legislative liaison to the Peace Officers Memorial Foundation, will be participating in a series of events hosted by the Foundation in Sacramento. Events included a candlelight vigil and special observance ceremony with the Governor and statewide Constitutional officers.

“Peace Officers Memorial Day affords Californians an opportunity to remember those individuals who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our safety and to express our gratitude to those who continue to dedicate themselves in making our state a safer place to live and raise our families,” added Correa.

SCR 39 passed unanimously off the Senate Floor 34/0.
