Luis Javier Garcia-Pedroza, a 36-year-old Anaheim man, was charged on Tuesday, Dec. 27, after he caused a vehicular collision involving eight cars that allegedly involved drug use. Vianey Granillo Ivey, a 36-year-old from Hawaiian Gardens, was killed in that collision.
Garcia-Pedroza is facing felony charges including gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence of a drug causing injury as well as a sentencing enhancement for inflicting great bodily injury on one of the victims of the crash.
The criminal complaint alleges he was driving at an unsafe speed, ran a red light and was inattentive.
The crash occurred at about 2:15 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 22, at Magnolia Avenue and Ball Road, according to the Anaheim Police Department.
The police allege that Garcia-Pedroza was speeding southbound along Magnolia Avenue in an SUV on Dec. 22 when he failed to stop at the red light at Ball Road. His SUV then collided with a sedan, setting off a chain reaction with six other vehicles. Ivey was the driver of the sedan.
Another victim was taken to an area hospital to be treated for moderate injuries, and nine others complained of pain but were treated on scene and did not require or declined to be checked out at a hospital.
