COSTA MESA, Calif. (February 21, 2024) — Earlier today, at about 12:45 p.m., Costa Mesa Police Department (CMPD) officers responded to a request for assistance from an outside agency attempting to pull over a stolen vehicle in Costa Mesa. The female suspect driver had rammed into law enforcement vehicles when she began to flee from them, according to the Costa Mesa Police Department.
The first of CMPD to arrive in the area was a motor sergeant. While the sergeant was following the stolen vehicle, another car collided with him and caused him to crash at Harbor Boulevard and Nutmeg Place, right in front of a shopping center. The sergeant sustained minor injuries and that part of the incident will be investigated by the California Highway Patrol.
Other CMPD officers responded to the area and located the stolen vehicle in the shopping center. They set up a perimeter and ultimately located the driver, Destiny Sherer, 29, city of residence unknown, at a store in the shopping center. Officers arrested Sherer for assault with a deadly weapon and driving a stolen vehicle.
This is an ongoing investigation into the incident and the stolen vehicle, which is suspected in burglaries in another nearby city.
