SANTA ANA, CA – A 58-year-old man was struck and killed by a vehicle in the area of Warner Avenue and Yale Street, located just south of the Yale Navigation Center, a homeless shelter in Santa Ana, according to the SAPD.
On Thursday, September 26, 2024, at approximately 5:42 a.m., the Santa Ana Police Department received a call regarding a traffic collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian in the area of Warner Ave. and Yale St.
Police officers, along with the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA), responded to the scene and located a man in the roadway with significant head injuries. OCFA immediately transported him to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on Friday, September 27, 2024.
Based on the preliminary investigation, it is believed the man was walking eastbound on the north side of Warner Ave., crossing Yale St. when a vehicle traveling eastbound on Warner Ave. attempted to turn northbound onto Yale St. and struck him.
The vehicle remained at the scene and the driver cooperated with the investigation. The cause of the collision is still under investigation; however, neither drugs nor alcohol appear to be a factor.
The Orange County Coroner’s Office identified the decedent as Mario Rodriguez (58) of Fountain Valley.
The Santa Ana Police Department’s Collision Investigations Unit (CIU) is investigating this incident.
